Cultural performances mark Janapada Utsav in Bidar

‘Folk arts should

be made part

of curriculum’

Do not be deterred by poverty, artistes told

BIDAR: A recommendation will be made to the State Government to seek funds to encourage folk arts through zilla, taluk and gram panchayats, corporations and municipalities, said member of the Third State Finance Commission and working president of Karnataka Janapada Parishat T. Thimme Gowda on Sunday.

He was speaking after inaugurating Janapada Utsav here. Mr. Gowda said that folk arts should be made part of curriculum to make children understand the importance of arts of their region.

He said efforts were on to convert Janapada Loka, set up by H.L. Nage Gowda near Channapatna on Bangalore-Mysore road, into a major tourist spot. “We have the responsibility to safeguard our culture from the onslaught of Western culture,” he said and lauded the Government decision to start Janapada Jatre, which had received overwhelming response from the people.

Referring to poor turnout at the Janapada Utsav here, Mr. Gowda said people should take interest in such programmes to help save our art and culture.

President of the Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy Keremane Shambu Hegde said that poverty and illiteracy should not deter an artiste. Mr. Hegde advised artistes to maintain quality.

President of Karnataka Rashtriya Education Society Channabasappa Halhalli, secretary of Bharatiya Vidyavardhaka Sangha S.G. Patil, president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bidar, Jagannath Hebbale and member-convener of the academy Girija M. Karpur addressed the gathering.

Mr. Hegde delivered the valedictory address in the evening.

Earlier, Mr. Hegde inaugurated a procession at the Karnataka Sahitya Parishat office. It passed via Haralaiah Circle and reached Rangamandira.

Performances such as “Dollu Kunita”, “Halage Kunita”, “Suggi Kunita” and “Bhajana Mela” by cultural troupes from the district enthralled the audience.
