The CMC currently has 32 containers Garbage can now be lifted mechanically Chitradurga: Under the Nirmal Nagar Scheme, the City Municipal Corporation (CMC) has received three Dumper Placer Vehicles ( DPV) along with 32 containers. The DPVs have been received as part of a solid waste management rule which prohibits manual work in the removal of garbage, since such manual work could lead to several chronic ailments. The scheme has already been launched in 57 cities and towns of the State, said CMC environment officer Chennabasanna. He said the hydraulic vehicles, which cost Rs. 9.79 lakh each, could carry a maximum of two containers and transport garbage to sites located on the outskirts of the city. The containers had been in operation earlier, but had no facility of lifting garbage for disposal. “This had resulted in workers being made to lift garbage manually and have them placed in the vehicles. But now this problem has been solved owing to technological advancements,” he said. The containers have been placed in 32 important areas of the city which have high garbage collection. “At some places, such as market areas, the lifting of containers is done twice a day and filled containers are replaced with empty ones. But at some places such as residential areas, the lifting of containers is done once in two or three days,” he said. Mr. Chennabasanna said that at present the CMC had 32 containers, but if required more would be purchased. The CMC also plans to distribute two garbage bins each to shop owners in market areas for disposal of dry wastes.
