TDB begins sand-filling of waterlogged patch

WORK ON A WARFOOTING: The sandfilling of the waterlogged area at Pampa Manalpuram, into which sewage is found leaking, on Sunday.

PAMPA: The Travancore Devaswom Board has started sand-filling of the waterlogged area into which sewage was found leaking from the nearby sewage collection tank of the Devaswom Board’s latrine block at the Pampa Manalpuram on the foothills of Sabarimala on Sunday.

The TDB started the sand-filling work following a notice served to its works department by District Collector Raju Narayanaswamy, who inspected the problem site on Saturday.

The Collector also directed the State Pollution Control Board to strictly monitor the waste disposal by various business establishments, especially the hotels, at Pampa and Sabarimala to check environment pollution.

District environment engineer Paulus Eapen has served notice to the TDB works department to block all drainages leading to River Pampa.TDB chief engineer Rajagopal said power supply disruption at Pampa had been affecting the pumping of sewage from the collection tanks to the treatment plant in Cheriyanavattom.However, the pumping of sewage from the main collection tank at the Pampa Manalpuram began on Friday itself, he added.
