PUDUCHERRY: Director of Medical Services (Puducherry) Dilip Kumar Baliga has stressed the need for making concerted efforts to control non-communicable diseases. Addressing a function to launch the ‘Diabetes walk’ to mark the World Diabetes Day here recently , Dr. Baliga highlighted the significant decline in the indices of communicable diseases in the Union Territory. However, non-communicable diseases, especially diabetes remained an important issue, he said. Director-Professor of Medicine and Medical Superintendent of Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Ashok Kumar Das said the World Diabetes Day was observed for the first time now by the World Health Organisation and the United Nations. The United Nations in its resolution on December 20 last had identified diabetes as a major health problem for the world, he recalled. The Diabetes Walk was organised by the JIPMER, Directorate of Medical Services, government of Puducherry and Indian Medical Association’s Puducherry branch. Physicians from all the three organisations, medical students and the public took part in the programme.
