‘Left intellectuals’ stance disturbing’

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Vichar Vibhag district unit has termed disturbing the “silence” of Left intellectuals on the incidents in Nandigram in West Bengal.

A press release of the Vibhag here on Sunday said the intellectuals should learn lessons from their counterparts in West Bengal who had come out to protest against the ‘war’ being waged against the local farmers in Nandigram.

A meeting of the Vibhag here expressed shock over reports of looting and rape in Nandigram, its president Balachandran Keezhoth said.

He said even the allies of the Left Front in West Bengal, the Governor of the State and cultural leaders had publicly deplored the developments in Nandigram.

‘Tirade against writers’

He said the Communists who had branded independent intellectuals such as the late M.P. Paul as reactionaries for their public stand against the ‘Calcutta Thesis’ were now trying to muzzle writers like Sara Joseph who were highlighting the ‘failures’ of the Left Democratic Front Government in the State.

He alleged that a member of the Cabinet was in the forefront to disparage such writers and cultural personalities in offensive language.
