Orissa
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has advertised for conducting test for Master’s Programme in Social Work and Disability Rehabilitation for 2008-10 in 17 cities of India. Unfortunately, Orissa is not included. Tata’s association with Orissa is well known. It has got maximum benefit from her natural resources. Its help in the time of natural disasters speaks of its good track record of corporate social responsibility. It is not at least expected of the Tata to ignore Orissa in the matter of extending equal opportunity to students of Orissa, who would have been immensely benefited by the examination centres. The bright students of the State who make their mark in all spheres of activities at home and abroad deserve a better deal. Hope TISS opens an examination centre for students of Orissa immediately. G.R. Dash Bhubaneswar A fit case to recover fundsIt is agonising to know that 28 academic and cultural institutions like Utkal University, Sambalpur University, Berhampur University, Orissa Sahitya Academy etc. are on the verge of being blacklisted for non-submission of utilisation certificates for the funds they received for preservation of manuscripts and rare books. This shows their inefficiency in maintaining records and controlling the staff who have been assigned the work. In case they are not able to submit the certificate in time, they should refund the funds which they have received. K.C. Mohanti Bhubaneswar Collective development is the mantraEveryone will agree that mega industrial projects are essential for the economic progress of Orissa. At a time when the State is facing problems like unemployment, poverty, low per capita income, poor infrastructure, there is an urgent need for people to think of collective development. But, many of the upcoming mega industrial projects seem to have fallen into the hands of self-centric people. For example, the proposed POSCO project has been put on hold as a group of vested interests has taken law into their hands denying access to the area for more than two years. While mega industries would bring in all-round development in the region and open the doors for numerous income generation opportunities for the locals, obstructing work for petty personal interests would not only create a bad precedence but also deprive the larger community from permanent economic benefits. Sreemoyee Chhotray Bhubaneswar State’s healthcare moves doubtfulNine Ministers of Orissa proceed to Puttaparti to seek the help of Shi Sathya Sai Baba in setting up a hospital in Orissa to provide a quality healthcare to the people (The Hindu, November 5, 2007). Though this shows the eagerness of the State government to seek the help of Si Baba to benefit the people, it is doubtful if the intention is true. In the past, there are several instances where massive aid came from the Centre but the amount was refunded due to non-utilisation or the amount shown as spent without giving an utilisation certificate. This displays the irresponsible attitude of the government. However, if the proposed healthcare hospital is set up in Orissa, it should be kept under the direct supervision and management of the authorities nominated by Sri Sai Baba.
