Given the green signal: The Vriddhachalam — Salem train that was flagged off on Sunday. VRIDDHACHALAM: Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss flagged off the Vriddhachalam — Salem passenger train service on the newly-converted broad gauge section here on Sunday. The service would give a thrust to passenger and freight movement, and contribute to the economic development of the region, he said. There would be two trips on either direction: the train will leave Vriddhachalam at 5.30 a.m. and reach Salem at 9 a.m., and in the return direction would leave Salem at 9 a.m. and reach Vriddhachalam at 12.45 p.m. In the second trip, the train will leave Vriddhachalam at 1.15 p.m. and reach Salem at 5 p.m. It would leave Salem at 5.30 p.m. and arrive at Vriddhachalam at 9 p.m. Dr. Ramadoss said Minister of State for Railways R. Velu, with Railway Minister Lalu Prasad’s cooperation, had taken the Railways to great heights. Waiting hallThe Union Minister also inaugurated a waiting hall built at a cost of Rs.6.5 lakh at the Vriddhachalam junction and laid the foundation stone for a 800-seater marriage hall, estimated to cost Rs.80 lakh, for the benefit of railway employees Mr. Velu said the gauge conversion of the 135-km long Vriddhachalam — Salem sector was originally estimated to cost Rs.190 crore. But owing to escalation in cement and steel prices, the expenditure touched Rs.246 crore. Certain contractors had abandoned work on account of the spiralling prices of construction materials, resulting in delay. To speed up work, the Southern Railway took up work on the 84-km Vriddhachalam — Athur sector and the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd on the 51-km Athur — Salem sector. Mr. Velu said the services would soon be extended to Cuddalore. After its completion, it would link the eastern and western coasts i.e. Cuddalore, Bangalore, Hassan and Mangalore. Three new routes — Tindivanam — Nagari (Rs.500 crore), Nagapattinam — Thiruthuraipoondi via Velankanni, Nagore and Thirukkuvalai (Rs.93 crore) and Tindivanam — Thiruvannamalai (Rs.127 crore) — had been approved. The Ennore — Nagari route was under consideration. In the current budget, the Railways had allocated Rs.1,075 crore to Tamil Nadu, including Rs.682 crore for electrification, doubling and laying of new tracks. Rakesh Chopra, General Manager, Southern Railway; R.C. Jat, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi; E. Ponnuswami and K. Dhanraj, MPs; G.K. Mani, Pattali Makkal Katchi president; T. Velmurugan, MLA and R. Silambuselvi, District Panchayat Chairman participated.
