Congress seeks talks on Karunakaran’s return

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Kerala unit of the Congress has demanded a Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) executive meeting to discuss the possible return of veteran leader and the former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran to the party fold.

This was communicated to All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in charge of Kerala Mohsina Kidwai at a breakfast meeting here on Sunday.

Mr. Karunakaran had joined the Nationalist Congress Party after differences over ticket distribution in the last Assembly polls.

The contention of the AICC delegates who met Ms. Kidwai was that KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala and the former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy were against Mr. Karunakaran’s return to the party. This necessitated a meeting of the KPCC executive with the Central leadership.

Venugopal’s demand

The anti-Karunakaran lobby represented by AICC delegate K.C. Venugopal indicated that there should be a clear signal from Mr. Karunakaran that he was keen on returning to the party.

The delegates were told that there had been no discussion at the national level on the issue. Congress leaders from the State, including Union Ministers A.K. Antony and Vayalar Ravi, were present at the meeting.
