The institutions are renowned for fostering discipline and values

MYSORE: It is a golden milestone in the annals of two institutions renowned for fostering discipline and values among students.

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) which grooms the future leaders of the country has completed 50 years of at Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala in Mysore. To commemorate the golden jubilee of the NCC unit, the Vidyashala is organising a programme on November 30 and will honour former cadets who represented the institution at the Republic Day parade in New Delhi.

The history of the NCC and Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala are closely entwined. It was among the earliest institutions to introduce NCC on July 15, 1948.

Though it had its origins in 1917 as University Corps, established by the British with the objective of making up for the shortage of men, in 1920 it was replaced by the University Training Corps following the enactment of the Indian Territorial Act. In 1942, the UTC was rechristened the University Officers Training Corps, which evolved as the NCC in 1948.

Objectives

The history and evolution of Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala synchronises with the growth of NCC in the country. The Vidyashala came into existence in 1953 and was the dream of Swami Shambhavanandaji Maharaj, the founder President of the Vidyashala. It was a humble effort in spreading quality education to ensure an all-round development of personality, with academic excellence and love for knowledge, and to inculcate higher values and ideals of Indian culture and develop an integrated personality with sound mind and sound body, as per the philosophy of Swami Vivekananda.

It also aimed to train students for leadership and the democratic way of life to enable them to become responsible citizens of democratic India. Apart from that was the aim of developing a sense of national integration, patriotism and love for humanity, a philosophy shared with NCC that has similar objectives.

According to Vidyashala authorities, the golden jubilee programme will commence at 8 a.m. on November 30.

It includes a guard of honour, marchpast and a field display.

In the last 50 years, NCC cadets from Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala have attended several camps and participated in national integration camps and in the prestigious Republic Day parade. A few students have received Director General Scholarships, Sahar India Scholarships and Best Cadet Award at different levels.
