Efforts on to fine-tune medical education

MADURAI: The State Government has formed a committee to suggest measures to improve medical education curriculum, said V.K. Subburaj, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, here on Saturday.

Addressing the gathering at the College Day celebrations of the Madurai Medical College, he said that steps had been initiated to improve curriculum and infrastructure on a par with private institutions.

The Government had sanctioned Rs.2.6 crore for improving facilities in Madurai Medical College he said and added that Rs.4 crore would be sanctioned for the hostel project.

A state-of-the-art 64 Slice CT Scan equipment worth Rs.5 crore had been sanctioned for the Government Rajaji Hospital, which would improve diagnostic facilities for heart ailments.

The job of running a canteen in Madurai Medical College could be entrusted to a self-help group and this could be a model for other medical colleges in the State to follow.

In an attempt to improve the health and hygiene within the medical colleges, the State Government had already supplied fogging machines and had posted health inspectors to supervise, effective utilisation, he said.

Presiding over the function, Collector S.S. Jawahar said that a committee had been formed to improve the environment, health and hygiene conditions in the campus.

V. Raji, Dean, Government Rajaji Hospital and Madurai Medical College, sought for a library and auditorium with improved infrastructure facilities such as air-conditioning.
