KULITHALAI: Efforts will be made to bring Thottiam and Musiri regions of Tiruchi district under the jurisdiction of the Transport Department’s new Motor Vehicle Inspector Unit office at Kulithalai, Transport Minister K.N. Nehru said here on Friday.

Speaking after declaring open the new unit office, Mr. Nehru said that the State Government has planned to open five new MVI Unit offices and two regional transport offices to meet demands of the burgeoning vehicle population.

At present over 90 lakh vehicles of various categories were plying on the roads in the State, making Tamil Nadu the second largest in the country after Maharashtra in terms of vehicle population, he observed.

On any working day around 4,000 to 5,000 vehicles were being registered while over 10,000 learner’s license were being issued and 8,000 licenses were being renewed. To meet the increasing service demand at the Regional Transport offices, it has been planned to construct at least five new offices every year, Mr. Nehru added.

To track down the vehicles in case of theft or road accidents, it has been planned to introduce SIM card technology in individual vehicles shortly, Mr. Nehru disclosed.

Recording data

Also, the Department has planned to record the data on various parameters of the vehicles including height, weight, ownership, etc., for vehicles entering the State at integrated facilities shortly, Mr. Nehru said.
