TIRUNELVELI: Coastal Village Vigilance Committees in Tamil Nadu have been revamped with an objective of ensuring law and order in the State, the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), K. Vijaykumar, has said.

The ADGP was here on Saturday to review the law and order situation in the southern districts of Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mr. Vijaykumar said that since the information provided by the citizens of the coastal hamlets was vital for maintaining law and order in the State, the police had taken certain measures to revamp the committees.

The committees, which were formed to track suspicious movement of people and vessels, would be strengthened and the police would interact constantly with the coastal community.

“Participation vital”

“Participation of the local community in this effort is vital since they (villagers) know any development in their area. We (the police force) can get useful information from them,” Mr. Vijaykumar said.

Mr. Vijaykumar asserted that the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu was totally under control and did not want to comment on the charges levelled by some of the political leaders that the law and order situation in the State had deteriorated after the Thevar jayanthi.

“The police took appropriate action after those incidents to bring the situation under control. We cannot allow any group to resort to violent protests such as road roko or pelting stones of buses and other vehicles,” he said.

The police officer, who successfully conducted the anti-Veerappan operation, refused to comment on the serial being aired on a television channel on the forest brigand.

“Everyone knows what he did and what the police did. We suffered a lot in the process of putting an end to that menace”.

At the meeting held with the top police officials of the three districts, Mr. Vijaykumar, while reviewing the crime incidents, the progress made in the investigations, prevention and prosecution of crimes, asked them to be on high alert considering the sensitive nature of these three districts.

The Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Sanjeev Kumar, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, P. Kannappan, the Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, M.N. Manjunatha, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Tirunelveli City, R. Dhinakaran, the Superintendents of Police, C. Sridar (Tirunelveli), Santhosh Kumar (Kanyakumari), Deepak M. Damor (Tuticorin), DSPs, and Inspectors of Special Branch and Intelligence Wing participated.
