Lok adalat soon in Madurai Bench

RAMANATHAPURAM: N. Paul Vasanthakumar, Judge of the Madras High Court, has said that a ‘lok adalat’ (people’s court) will function soon at the Madras High Court in Madurai.

Presiding over a function organised by the Ramanathapuram Bar Association and addressing at the ‘lok adalat’ here on Saturday, he said this was one similar to the lok adalat functioning in Madras High Court, Chennai.

The proposed court would hear cases daily and work for speedy disposal of cases.

Mr. Paul Vasanthakumar said that nearly 33,217 ‘lok adalat’ sittings were held and nearly 3.35 lakh cases settled from 1986 to 2007.

A compensation of Rs.1,357 crore was awarded to various aggrieved parties through the ‘lok adalats.’

During the last year alone, 52,166 cases were disposed of and awarded a compensation of Rs.121 crore. The concept had considerably reduced the rate of pending cases.
