‘Common school system’ sought
Staff Reporter
Tuticorin: Educational activists belonging to non-governmental organisations, Tamilnadu Alliance for Right to Education and Equity (TAFRE) and Centre for Human Empowerment through Educational Related Services, staged a dharna here on Saturday to press their charter of demands.
Sister A. Assunta, district convener, TAFRE, said that the Government should ensure free education to all children in the State up to the age of 18 years. Special fees should not be collected from students in any school.
She said that steps should be taken immediately by the authorities concerned to implement the ‘common school system’ suggested by the Kothari Commission.
“Though the commission was constituted in 1964, its recommendations were not implemented in letter and spirit,” she alleged.
Owing to non-implementation of the suggestions, many of the schools in the State still have poor student-teacher ratio and the dropout rate of students from the coastal areas remained high.
