This Day That Age
Mr. Abid Ali, Union Deputy Labour Minister, told the Fourth Asian Regional Conference of the ILO in New Delhi on November 15 that poverty in Asian countries which was “still crushing and widespread” was a challenge not only to the people of the region but also to the “conscience” of the more fortunate nations of the world. Initiating a debate on the Director-General’s Report, Mr. Abid Ali expressed the hope that there would be a more general recognition of the principle that poverty anywhere was a menace to prosperity elsewhere and that the more advanced countries “will have the imagination to help themselves by helping their less fortunate neighbours”. Mr. Abid Ali said Asia where the process of industrialisation had just begun, offered the ILO a unique opportunity. By helping to evolve patterns of development suited to Asian countries and by developing in advance guiding principles for action, the ILO could facilitate a rapid, smooth and orderly transition in this region.
