Letters to the Editor
The Pakistan Emergency is a direct fallout of its politicians’ failure to manage the political environment of their country. They played into the hands of Pervez Musharraf who exploited their mutual distrust to his advantage. By making a deal with him, PPP leader Benazir Bhutto failed to take advantage of the popular resentment against the General in the wake of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry’s removal, little realising that such a political atmosphere takes years to build up. The forceful exile of Nawaz Sharif suited her. Now it is her turn to be at the receiving end. The developments in Pakistan should serve as a warning to the politicians in India. They should develop a sense of mutual respect and tolerance for one another if democracy is to thrive. B.R. Pandya, Surat It was disquieting to read that Imran Khan was detained by a group of radical students and handed over to the police at the Punjab University (Nov. 15).
