MYSORE: The Karnataka Athletic Association (KAA) can definitely do a rethink. For the junior State athletic championship, set to get underway at the Chamundi Vihar stadium from Monday, is shorn of glamour and quality. The three-day event ahead of the Junior Nationals to be held at Vijaywada soon after the State meet clashes with the State pre-university event at Bijapur and the High School championship at Davangere. “We have to juggle our athletes around... and many of them opted for the pre-university and school meet for obvious reasons” chorused many coaches. The State Association could have averted this clash of dates through discussion with the State Educational board. “But then the Nationals was twice postponed and we have no control over it” is the lament from the state officials. Over 1,100 athletes from 16 districts have assembled though with a couple more like Bagalkote and Gadag are expected to swell the numbers. International Poovamma, Bopanna and Nirupama Sunderraj and Rebecca Jose are a few names who will strive to make it big with or without competitions. But this surely is an opportunity for lesser names to make an impact on the bigger stage and the well rolled lanes are sure to help them to some good timings.
