Reasons for students’ misconceptions about mathematics analysed

Learning session: Teachers from various schools learn about new teaching methods at a workshop organised by Educational Initiatives in Chennai on Friday.

CHENNAI: Teachers from various schools in and around the city learnt about various misconceptions about different subjects among the students and also innovative teaching methods to prevent them at a workshop held at Kaligi Ranganathan Montford Matriculation School, Perambur, on Friday.

Organised by Educational Initiatives, an organisation working towards providing quality education, the workshop analysed reasons for the misconceptions prevalent among the students about mathematics.

Common mistakes

The 30 participants were taught, using a video programme, about the common mistakes that students commit in the subject.

Trainer from Educational Initiatives Renu Srinivasan said the workshop dealt with students’ understanding of the concepts in various subjects and methods to rectify errors committed by them. Teachers would be trained to understand the students’ level and needs and improve their ability to reach out to students with innovative teaching methods.

The workshops were based on the results of ‘Asset,’ an objective test conducted sometime ago for students to check their understanding and application of conceptions that are covered in the school curriculum, she added. The test is conducted for students of classes III to IX in English, mathematics and science.

Educational Initiatives conducted three workshops on various subjects at different venues on Friday.
