DHARWAD: A large number of students and teachers took part in the “SIO awakening the nation” rally and the regional conference organised by the Students’ Islamic Organisation in Dharwad on Sunday. The rally and the conference were part of the SIO’s national conference to be held in Mumbai this month. Two more regional conferences will be held in Bangalore and Mangalore on Monday and Wednesday, respectively. The rally was flagged off at the Anjuman-e-Islam College Ground. It passed through the main thoroughfares of the city, including Subhash Road, Jubilee Circle, and Kalabhavan. Speaking at the regional conference, J.H. Kulkarni, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), expressed concern over degradation of moral values, especially in the education system. The Vice-Chancellor said not many in the country had realised the gravity of the problem pollution was causing and underscored the need for creating awareness on the issue. Durga Das, head of the Department of Kannada, Karnatak University, and journalist Gopalkrishna Hegde said education was the essence of development. Hashmatulla Khan of SIO spoke.
