Traffic police roping in sponsors Law & order

Private bus services to be streamlined, writes Anand Haridas

With no funds for city traffic maintenance in sight, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) and city traffic officials are turning to sponsors for help.

“We need at least Rs.10 lakh to install the complete signal system in the city. With no funds coming, we have no other way but to streamline the system of getting sponsors,” said A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, District Collector and chairman of the RTA.

The problem with getting things done using sponsorship, it is pointed out, is that once a machine develops snags, getting it repaired becomes difficult.

At the same time, the city traffic police are getting a good response from sponsors. “Due to the high visibility, sponsors are ready to associate with traffic programmes,” said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

The city police have lined up many projects with the support of sponsors. Reviving the punching cabin for private buses as part of an effort to streamline the service is on top of the priority. As part of the drive, the punching system will be digitised. This will be followed by setting up of check-posts at six entry points to the city. “Three panchayats – Varapuzha, Mulavukad and Chellanam – have given permission to set up check-posts in their area,” he said. The remaining check-posts are coming up at Aroor, Thrikkakkara and Udayamperoor.

“Besides having an impact on fighting crime, these check-posts can be converted to points for studying traffic in the long run,” Mr. Abraham said.

According to the proposal, an arch will be set up along with a cabin for the police personnel. A camera will be installed on the arch and monitored from the control room. The city police are also working on schemes to streamline private bus service.

Without reducing the number of bus stops, the police are planning to chart alternative stops for buses operating along the same route. The scheme has been prepared after a study by the city traffic police about the time and routes of private buses.
