There is a FCI godown complex in Sivananda Colony. Insects emanating from the godown are creating nuisance to the colony residents and two-wheeler riders. Many accidents are reported to have happened because of the insects falling into the eyes of the riders. Frequency of fumigation in the godown is very low, below the specified level. Ventilators and doors in the godown do not have meshes or nets to prevent the insects coming out from the godown. Lorries coming to the godown cause traffic jam and pollution. The entire godown complex should be shifted to the city’s outskirts. The complex is situated near Coimbatore North railway station and the nearly 48 acres of land could be used for expansion of the North railway station junction which will decongest the saturated Coimbatore main junction. Many road schemes have been kept in abeyance because of the godown. V.K.S.K. Senthil Kumar, Coimbatore. Traffic accidentsThe report on the death of a girl caused by a speeding call taxi right in front of her school made sad reading. The two main causes for road accidents in the city are people’s disrespect for traffic rules and the lackadaisical attitude of the police towards traffic rule violations. It is common to see buses racing breaking speed limits and stopping abruptly even in the middle of the road to pick up passengers, all in the presence of the police. Lorries ply at terrific speed carrying more than the permissible load. Call taxi drivers and automen think that traffic rules do not apply to them. ‘No entry’ sign boards have lost their meaning since no one cares about them. There are many busy road intersections in the city without traffic lights and with heavy traffic not manned by the police. Only proper policing and ruthless implementation of road rules will reduce road accidents. K. Vasudevan, Ramnagar. Damaged busWhen I travelled recently in bus 16C I observed that on the left side of the bus a fixed window above a shutter had no glass. In the rain water seeped into the bus through the open window. The mica sheet in the back of the bus was detached from the body and there was a wide gap through which rain water entered the bus. I am surprised how the branch manager of the depot concerned allowed this bus on the road. N.R. Ravisankar, Vilankurichi. Raining chaosWhen rain lashes Coimbatore the city is thrown into chaos. The city continues to suffer and only voluntary agencies like RAAC and Siruthuli offer solace to the harried citizens. Their action in cleaning roads and desilting tanks has saved the city. The city’s administrators should concentrate on solving the city’s problems instead of sending delegations to Japan and other countries to study the civic infrastructure there. Phones do not work and BSNL is turning a deaf ear to complaints. Even its complaint line is at fault. C.S. Ramakrishnan, Ponniahrajapuram. Greenhouse emissionsIndia imports wheat, pulses and oilseeds. That apart, export of non-basmati rice should be analysed from a different angle, not from economic but social compulsions. Stern Review, a commission report sought by the British Government, states that fertilizers are the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions followed by livestock gases and wetland rice cultivation. Farm scientists ruined Indian agriculture by Green Revolution. In 2002 at an international conference on conservation of water, Germany’s Environment Minister observed that developed countries should not encourage import of rice from developing countries which were struggling without drinking water. K.K. Lakshmanan, Tiruchy Road. Parking lotRecently I went to the Coimbatore junction railway parking lot to park my scooter. It is an awful place with mud and slush everywhere. When I went to take my scooter there was drizzle. I won’t forget the ordeal I suffered while removing the scooter from the parking lot. When I complained the custodian there told me that he was helpless. C.R. Sadasivam, Ondipudur. Readers can mail to cbereaders@ thehindu.co.in with address and telephone number.
