THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The absence of a provision to recall elected representatives who have lost the confidence of the electorate is one of the major drawbacks of the democratic system of government in India, the former bureaucrat T.N. Jayachandran has said. He was delivering a lecture on “Administration in a democratic system” organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Kshatriya Kshema Sabha to observe the 112th birth anniversary of Regent Maharani of erstwhile Travancore Setu Lakshmi Bayi here on Sunday. Mr. Jayachandran called upon government employees to take a pledge against corruption. “Unauthorised absence and late arrival at offices are also corrupt practices. Officials must be aware that a major portion of the State’s revenue is spent on their salary and benefits.” Earlier, the head of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore Uthradam Tirunal Marthanda Varma inaugurated the anniversary observance.
