Baalu orders action against erring officials for schools’ poor condition

REVIEW OF WORKS: Union Minister and South Chennai Member of Parliament T. R. Baalu inspecting the bus shelter under construction at Chromepet on Saturday.

TAMBARAM: Angered at the pathetic condition of a couple of school buildings in his constituency, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T. R. Baalu on Saturday instructed Kancheepuram district administration authorities to initiate action against the erring officials.

During a day-long inspection of development works and civic amenities in his constituency, Mr. Baalu, Member of Parliament from South Chennai, dedicated new classrooms in government higher secondary schools in Pallavaram and Chromepet.

He then inspected the bus shelter being built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at Chromepet.

The Minister was accompanied, among others, by Kancheepuram Collector Santhosh Misra, Additional Collector Archana Patnaik, Tambaram MLA S. R. Raja, Pallavaram Municipal Chairman E. Karunanidhi and senior officials of the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply and other government departments.

Mr.Baalu told reporters that several welfare works were being executed in different parts of his constituency from funds sanctioned by Parliament and the inspection was to review their present status.

He visited the Adi Dravidar Welfare School in Palavakkam village on East Coast Road. Upset at the unhygienic conditions, he pulled up elected representatives and officials of the St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union.

The Minister, later, went to Injambakkam where he was furious when informed that there was no doctor on duty at the Government Accident and Trauma Care Centre. He asked the officials to ensure availability of a doctor during working hours.

At the Government Higher Secondary School in Sholinganallur, he lashed out at the school /authorities for the poor condition of new buildings constructed by the Public Works Department at the cost of about Rs. 80 lakhs. As the floor was damaged, he said the damages had to be set right in 24 hours, and instructed officials of the Kancheepuram district administration to take stern against the contractor, PWD officials and school authorities.
