TIMELY HELP: M. Ponnavaikko, (right) Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, giving away the cash donated by M.A.M. College of Engineering to C. Nirmala, Headmistress of Government High School at Siruganur for construction of classrooms.
TIRUCHI: It was a timely assistance for the students of the Government High School in Siruganur on the Tiruchi–Chennai National highway on the outskirts of the city.
The school’s compound and four class-rooms were demolished to make way for the four-laning Tiruchi-Chennai National highway, leaving the students and the school authorities in the lurch.
Realising the difficulties in running the classes, the management of the M.A. M. College of Engineering, about three km from Siruganur, came to their rescue, donating Rs.30,000 for construction temporary class-rooms.
The Vice-Chancellor of the Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko handed over the cash to school Headmistress C. Nimala at a function held at the college on Saturday.
College Principal M. A. Maulk Mohammad and its Director V. Shanmuganathan were among those who were present.
Ms. Nirmala later told The Hindu that the assistance would be utilised for the construction of temporary structures for running the classes. New class-rooms would be constructed utilising the funds sanctioned by the Education Department in course of time. A few more class-rooms faced demolition, she added.
