MP seeks better telecom facility for Karaikal

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: Leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi and Member of Parliament M.Ramadass on Saturday sought the intervention of Minister for Communications and Information Technology A. Raja to transfer the telecom administration of Karaikal from Kumbakonam to Puducherry Secondary Switching Area (SSA).

In a letter to Mr. Raja, he said that the move was essential to provide better telecommunication facility for Karaikal in consistent with the development of the second largest region of the Union Territory (UT) of Puducherry.

Though all the departments of the UT and Central governments at Karaikal were under the management and administration of the head offices in Puducherry, the telecommunication branch of the region was under the control of the General Manager, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Kumbakonam, in Tamil Nadu.

“Till about 12 years ago, the Telecommunication Department of Karaikal was under the jurisdiction and supervision of the Puducherry Telecom District. It was separated from Puducherry and merged with Kumbakonam office for some unknown reasons,” Mr.Ramadass said.

“With the spurt in plan activities, Karaikal is making rapid strides in industry, education, service sector and infrastructure,” he said, adding that the telecom facilities provided by the BSNL, Kumbakonam, were unable to meet the growing needs of telecommunication facilities of the region.

Cable faults took a long time for rectification and the provision of broadband was delayed in all areas. The Wireless Local Loop coverage was also very poor with only two Base Transreceiver Stations and the total number of broadband connections was only 600 when compared to more than 8,500 of Puducherry Secondary Switching Area.

“Lack of poor telecommunication facilities appears to impede the faster progress of Karaikal,” he said.

“There are a number of major players such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and big industrial units that are suffering from the substandard facility in Karaikal,” Mr.Ramadass said.
