“Education cess being diverted”

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The Urban District Janata Dal (Secular) students’ wing has urged the State government to ensure that the education cess collected by the municipalities and corporations were utilised for the development of the schools run by them.

At a meeting held here recently, with N. Sethuraman, district president in the chair, the organisation alleged that some of the urban civic bodies were diverting the funds for other purposes much against the government order.

The government should ensure that its order was implemented properly. If the civic bodies continued to flout the order, the students wing of the party would mobilise public support and take to the streets to fight for the cause, a resolution adopted at the meeting said.

It also urged the State government to implement the recommendations of Dr.Muthukumaran Committee and introduce the common syllabus in schools at the earliest.

Steps should also be taken to open Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in all panchayat unions utilising the funds given by the Union government. Poor students could get access to standard education through these schools.

Such schools have been opened in all parts of the country except Tamil Nadu. Injustice was being meted out to students of the State as the opportunity has not been tapped for over two decades mainly because that Hindi would be taught in these schools.

By refusing to concede the demand, the State was only denying a good opportunity for the students, it said.

The State government should also take steps to start English medium schools. Even families belonging to poorer sections want to put their children in English medium schools, but could not afford the expense in private schools. The government should at least start English medium sections in the existing schools, it said.
