BANGALORE: Helmets signified old farmers while the plastic water bottles and small toys assumed the role of human body parts. “We are giving them free of cost… which one do you want,” asked two people as they piled up bodies of those raising their voices against their activity. This street play ended with the lead actor asking, “Wake up… how many bodies need to be sacrificed.” Multilingual street playThis multilingual street play on Nandigram was presented by Mayavan Theatre Group on the pavement adjoining the Mahatma Gandhi statue here on Sunday. This was among the many street plays presented as part of a protest against the atrocities in Nandigram in West Bengal. “We want the people to raise their voice against the violence inflicted on the farmers and those speaking against the Special Economic Zone,” said Abhishek Majumdar, director of the multilingual play. Human valuesAnother amateur theatre activist Srijit Mukherji said the protest was against the violation of basic human values in Nandigram. The democratic ways of protest were being stifled. ‘Back march’Software professional Kallol Dasgupta said the protestors will do a “back march” to show that the Government was moving backward from democracy to fascism. Arundhati Battacharya, a lecturer in Bangalore University, said development cannot happen at the cost of democracy. The demonstrations were held near the Cauvery Emporium on M.G. Road too. The protestors held placards such as “Salam Nandigram” “Stop Reign of Terror” “Can’t be Neutral” and “Give Peace a Chance”.
