PUDUCHERRY: The Chairperson of Ethics and Medico-legal Committee of Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecologic Societies of India (FOGSI), Prakash V. Pawar, on Sunday asked clinics with Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) registration to make it a point to inform the authorities concerned of any cognisable offence that came to their notice. Addressing a meeting of obstetricians and gynaecologists here, Dr. Pawar said the authorities concerned must be informed even about regular MTPs before 5th of the following month. “There is no bar on conducting an MTP even if it is a rape case. But the registered medical practitioner, whose clinic is registered, should ensure that all formalities are completed under the MTP Act before the procedure is performed. Under the Act, it is illegal to terminate pregnancy if it is beyond 20 weeks,” he explained. A practical solution in all cases of MTP was to ask the patient herself or the accompanying person to write the person’s full name, age, marital status and reason for the termination for pregnancy, he said. He explained that when there was a death on the operation table or owing to some other problem, people failed to understand that different patients reacted differently to drugs and surgery. “The human body is not a machine and the mechanism changes when there is stress or other influencing factors,” Dr. Pawar said. As a precautionary measure, the FOGSI was asking different associations to form district-level committees, a kind of flying squad, comprising a cardiologist, surgeon, obstetric, anaesthesiologist and other experts, that could be called during emergency. “Some districts have formed such committees and these will help the single doctors in the clinics,” he added.
