New species of plant found
Kalpetta: A two-member team of researchers has found in Wayanad a new species of plant that has not been listed in any botanical records.
The plant that belongs to the family of custard apple (Annonaceae) has been named Miliusa wayanaddica by its discoverers Dr. M.K. Ratheesh Narayanan and Dr. Sujanapal.
“It was during our floristic exploration of plants facing extinction that we came across the unrecorded plant recently from Kattimattom forest situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres above sea level in Meppadi range,” Dr. Ratheesh Narayanan, associated with the M.S. Swaminathan Foundation, said.
Well-known botanist Dr. J.S. Weld Kamp of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands had confirmed that this plant had not been described or recorded so far, he said.
Dr. Sujanapal, a scientist with KFRI, said they could find 15 plants of Miliusa Wayanaddica at Kattimattom.– PTI
