THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala government is expecting to complete the preparation of the project report on the Mullaperiyar dam within six months. Minister for Water Resources N. K. Premachandran said on Sunday that the commencement of the work on the new dam could not be scheduled now. Problems were expected in environmental clearances for the project. The new dam was proposed to be constructed at a location identified by the Central Water Commission in 1976.This was about 1,300 feet downstream of the existing dam and was within the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The proposal to construct a new dam was mooted by the government last year. An all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan then wanted the government to press Tamil Nadu for a new dam. However, Tamil Nadu disagreed with the proposal. But Kerala decided to go ahead with the plans for a new dam. The Cabinet approved the proposal to start preliminary work on the dam in August this year.
