Thomas Bata Toronto: Thomas Bata (93), head of shoe empire ‘Bata Shoes,’ has been honoured by the Canada India Business Council (CIBC) for his outstanding contributions to promoting India in Canada. The award was presented to Mr. Bata by Jim Prentice, Canada’s Industry Minister, at the fourth Corporate Diwali dinner hosted to celebrate the CIBC’s 25th anniversary. Mr. Bata said he was grateful to India as a country that provided him an opportunity to serve its billion people by letting him put shoes on their feet. Having opened his first small factory in Konnagar (near Kolkata) in 1932, India remained his favourite country, with over 8,000 employees serving customers in 932 stores. A legendMr. Prentice described Mr. Bata as a true Canadian business legend. The Minister commended the role played by the CIBC in helping to build trade relationship between the countries. — PTI
