Mahanta denies hand in killings

Tezpur (Assam): The former Assam Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, indicted by a judicial panel for the “secret killings” of some ULFA kin, on Sunday said his party would demand a high-level probe into all such deaths since 1991.

The Asom Gana Parishad (Pragatisheel) would demand a judicial inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge into all such killings since 1991, Mr. Mahanta said during the ongoing State-level convention of the party. The party had been examining the legal implications in this matter and was consulting legal experts, he said.

Mr. Mahanta alleged that several killings had taken place during the tenure of the present Congress government, but the administration had not even ordered a judicial probe. “The Congress is out to destabilise it by falsely implicating me,” he claimed.

AGP distances itself

The AGP on Sunday preferred to keep itself at a distance from Mr. Mahanta, saying he is answerable to the people of the State after his indictment by a judicial panel.

AGP president Brindaban Goswami said Mr. Mahanta should bear personal responsibility after being indicted by the Commission. — PTI
