Grameen bank offers loans for women seeking alms

Pune: The Grameen Bank in Bangladesh would now offer loans for women seeking alms, its founder Muhammad Yunus said on Saturday.

“We now have a new programme in which these women are given loans and there are one lakh of them at present who are encouraged to sell small merchandise and useful articles as they go out seeking alms,” he said.

Around 10,000 of them have now stopped seeking alms and have become small businesswomen, he said, addressing members of a women’s Self-Help Group.

“Around 90,000 of them now seek alms part time; they know which house is good for hawking their goods and which one is a better proposition for just seeking alms,” Mr. Yunus said.

He said human beings were “wonderful creatures” and many people die without knowing their potential.

“What we need is leaders of vision who can fully exploit this potential to lift up a nation.” — PTI
