Will attend several meetings, seminars and conferences in India

NEW DELHI: London Mayor Ken Livingstone commenced his week-long trip to India by paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat here on Sunday. He later visited the Akshardham temple complex before going to the Nizamuddin Dargah, the mausoleum of Sufi saint Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya.

Over the course of his trip that also includes a visit to Mumbai, Mr. Livingstone will attend several meetings, seminars and conferences on the theme “London and India: Partners in Globalisation”.

Accompanying the London Mayor on his trip are, among others, London-2012 Olympic Organising Committee Chairman Lord Sebastian Coe, Chief Executive of the Committee Paul Deighton and Commissioner for Transport for London Peter Hendy.

Mr. Livingstone said: “Cultural interaction between India and London is already strong and is going to increase even further. The aim of this visit is to continue to build on and reinforce these links to strengthen a deep rooted and special relationship between London and India.” The principal areas that will be targeted will be tourism, overseas education, civic infrastructure and cultural exchange.
