A feel of Thailand at Dilli Haat

PROMOTING ART: Dastkari Haat Samiti’s cultural interaction “Under One Roof” to begin at Dilli Haat in New Delhi today.

NEW DELHI: To celebrate the 60th year of India’s diplomatic ties with Thailand, Dastkari Haat Samiti is organising a special crafts design and cultural interaction called “Under One Roof” at Dilli Haat here from Tuesday.

On the invitation of the Dastkari Haat Samiti, participation of skilled Thai craft persons is being co-ordinated under the Asian Handicrafts Promotion and Development Association of Thailand. Thai craft stalls will be a special addition to the interaction to promote Thai skills and culture.

During the event, crafts persons can be observed working in basketry, embroidery, inlaid wood, painted wood, silver jewellery and dyeing grasses and textiles in natural colours with their Indian counterparts to share new designs and techniques. They will be guided by a designer from Chaing Mai University, Thailand, a natural dyeing expert from the Royal Princess Project in Thailand, and Dastkari Haat Samiti designers.

Along with the usual popular Indian delicacies available at Dilli Haat, special Thai cuisine including inexpensively priced street food will be available during the event. A host of cultural programmes will also be featured as part of the event.

To provide new design possibilities to Indian craft persons so that they can produce contemporary articles for national and international markets, Dastkari Haat Samiti has been regularly organising crafts design and cultural exchange workshops with craft persons of other countries that share rich handicraft traditions. Apart from helping Indian crafts people to share their skills, these workshops also help hundreds of visitors learn about other craft cultures.

Some of these workshops include “Dostkari” with Pakistan in 2004, “Lotus Links” with Vietnam in 2004, “Afrikhadi” with South Africa in 2005 and “Elephant Tales” with Sri Lanka in 2006.

The event will be on up to December 3.
