MANGALORE: Visitors to Dr. Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama Biological Park at Moodushedde near here will soon see the flying squirrel vie for attention with 65-odd species of animals already present there.

Known scientifically as “pteromyini” or “petauristini”, this infant was found inured around a fortnight ago in the forest reaches near Sampaje in Sullia taluk and brought to the park for treatment.

H. Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of the park, told The Hindu here on Monday that the park employees were hand rearing this flying squirrel. “People do not realise these animals, faced with the prospect of starvation, stray from their natural environment towards human habitations in search of food.

“What is more important is for people and the authorities concerned to realise that wounded sick animals need care and could not be left to fend for themselves,” Mr. Bhandary said.
