Meet hopes to gather information about various child reporters’ initiatives across India

NEW DELHI: Aimed at bringing together budding journalists and their mentors, a three-day national convention of child reporters opened at Gandhi Darshan here on Monday.

Organised jointly by Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund, the convention is being attended by child reporters from 14 states and union territories including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Karnataka and West Bengal.

On the first day of the convention, Subhalikha Barua from Jorhat in Assam, who brings out a children’s wallpaper, shared her experience as a child reporter.

“Through our wallpaper, we are promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence in our State. I am also involving other children in preserving our environment. We are organising workshops in tea gardens,” she said.

The convention hopes to gather information about various child reporters’ initiatives across the country.

Identifying issues

Besides helping identify issues on child reporting which needs further dialogue so as to build up a consensus around networking, the convention will document the impact of child reporters on other children, on the school community, on the local community, on local or other decision makers.

During the convention, the child reporters will share their experiences of working in their community, reporting issues of social concern and featuring those issues either in their journals or community newspapers.

Child reporters of “The Yamuna”, the global children’s newspaper brought out by Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, will also interact with other senior journalists from both the print and electronic media.
