State’s achievements in agriculture showcased at trade fair

Replica of Darjeeling tea gardens put up, depicting ladies collecting tea leaves
Victoria Memorial illustrated aesthetically through a huge replica of monument

NEW DELHI: Taking into consideration the theme of the ongoing India International Trade Fair at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, the West Bengal pavilion is showcasing its achievements in agriculture productivity and food processing industry.

To highlight West Bengal’s contribution to the country’s egg production as well as broiler meat, a replica of a typical poultry farm of the State with hens and eggs has been displayed in an interesting manner.

The State’s expertise in packaging and canning has also been amply displayed. The display items include a huge sauce-making machine and an innovative juicer.

For the first time, the Darjeeling tea garden has been beautifully portrayed through a replica that depicts the sprawling green garden as well as ladies collecting tea leaves. According to an official, Dr. Campbell, a civil surgeon of the Indian Medical Service in the 19th Century used seeds from China and started experimenting with a tea plantation in the State. “He was responsible for making Darjeeling tea popular. Now it is the most sought after tea across the world. It has been prized above all other varieties by tea connoisseurs.”

To showcase the State’s progress in Information Technology, a huge head of a man in fibre glass is shown revolving round-the-clock. “The twinkling lights on the man’s head suggests that the mind is actively working,” said S. K. Roy, fabricator of the pavilion.

The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata has also been illustrated aesthetically through a huge replica. Besides the building constructed by Lord Curzon in 1901, a miniature carriage with two horses is also on display.

Besides a number of jute items like bags and “jholas”, the pavilion is also showcasing the cottage and village industries.
