Inquiry into false medical certificates of welfare schemes

BELLARY: Deputy Commissioner Arvind Srivastav has given an assurance that he will conduct an inquiry on allegations that ineligible persons are obtaining certificates claiming to be disabled in order to get benefits of welfare schemes.

The assurances came after Umapathi, secretary of the Chaitanya Physically Handicapped Welfare Association, Hagari Bommanahalli, submitted a complaint to Mr. Srivastav at a meeting convened here on Monday to redress the grievances of the disabled.

Mr. Umapati, charged that several persons who were not disabled had registered their names at the Hampasagar Gram Panchayat.

He also charged that they had obtained false medical certificates to claim benefits, and he urged the Deputy Commissioner to initiate stern action against the persons involved.

Mr. Srivastav had asked the nodal officer in charge of Hagari Bommanahalli taluk to visit the gram panchayat along with the District Health Officer to review the list of registered disabled persons and to submit a report. Around 81 disabled persons, from various parts of the district, participated in the meeting and submitted their complaints. Of them 10 persons sought employment, 18 people wanted financial assistance to take up income-generating activities, 27 people demanded houses under the Ashraya scheme and three wanted benefits of the Prime Minister’s Rozgar Yojana.

Mr. Srivastav said that 4,638 houses (4,492 houses in rural areas and 146 houses in urban areas), under the Ashraya scheme had been earmarked for the disabled. The list of beneficiaries was ready and it would be tabled before the Ashraya committee for approval soon, he added.

The meeting was also informed that the Government had passed a special order to provide employment to the disabled at the gram panchayat level and eligible candidates could apply.

Lakshmi Narayan, project director of the zilla panchayat and Meti, Deputy Director of Department of Women and Child Development were present.
