Railways abuzz before ballot

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: All the railway establishments in Tirupati and Renigunta, besides the carriage repair shop here, are abuzz with union activities with barely a week to go for the secret ballot to be conducted by the establishment to pave the way for the election of a single union which should be recognised by the Government. The secret ballot to be conducted for three days from November 26, would be on the lines stipulated by a committee constituted by the railway ministry with C.L. Kaw as its head in response to the directives issued by the apex court as well as the Madras High Court.

The General Secretary of the S.C. Railway Mazdoor Union, C.H. Sankar Rao, who is also the Assistant General Secretary of the All India Railway Men’s Federation and the General Secretary of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha, AP unit, along with other senior union leaders addressed railwaymen on Monday in this connection at the Tirupati railway station and explained the significance of the secret ballot election ahead.

It would provide the railwaymen the right to elect their own union to fight for their cause at higher level, he said. He also explained the disadvantage of having multiple unions and said that besides leading to mushrooming of splinter unions such a situation would only weaken the unity among the railwaymen.

He also addressed ‘gate meeting’ at CRS along with other union leaders like Y. Veera Raju, Divisional Secretary, Workshops and G. Subba Narasaiah, DS, SCRMU.
