Mahanta denies hand in killings

Tezpur (Assam): The former Assam Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, indicted by a judicial panel for the “secret killings” of some ULFA kin, has said his party would demand a high-level probe into all such deaths since 1991.

The Asom Gana Parishad (Pragatisheel) would demand a judicial probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into all such killings since 1991, Mr. Mahanta said during the ongoing State-level convention of the party. The party had been examining the legal implications in this matter and was consulting legal experts, he said.

Mr. Mahanta alleged that several killings had taken place during the tenure of the present Congress government, but no judicial probe was ordered. — PTI
