Engineering college

Following the announcement of the Government that each district will have an engineering college, Kanyakumari district, which hitherto has no government engineering college, will get an engineering college from the ensuing academic year.

It is difficult to procure land in the district what with soaring land price and bungling of political parties. Hence, an engineering college can function in the government polytechnic itself after making slight alterations.

V. Kumar,

Thekkurichy, Kanyakumari district.

Coastal rail service

The coastal rail service between Tuticorin and Kanyakumari is a long-felt need of the people in these areas.

The towns such as Authoor, Kayalpatnam, Tiruchendur, Kulasekarapatnam, Udangudi and Uvari are the main centres of attraction in their own ways.

Tiruchendur is a temple town and one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga. Many festivals attract lakhs of devotees to this place.

Apart from being a tourist centre, Kanyakumari’s importance need not be stressed.

So, the railway authorities much initiate special efforts to link Tuticorin and Kanyakumari by rail.

N. Kasilingam,

Tuticorin.

Laudable service

This has reference to the news item ‘Saplings planted’ (The Hindu, dated November 4, 2007).

It is indeed heartening that the ‘Marumalarchi Maiyam’ (The Renaissance Centre) in Tirunelveli has been doing a yeoman service to the citizens of the area for well over the past six months. The Maiyam attracts the members of the public in large numbers since all the Tamil and English newspapers, monthly and weekly journals are made available in the centre with long working hours. Since two numbers of personal computers are installed with internet connection, the student community finds them useful for their studies and project works as using the internet is free.

S. Nallasivan,

Tirunelveli.
