Minister seeks Tamil Nadu’s support

Staff Reporter

KUMILY: A safe and secure dam at Mullaperiyar is essential to safeguard the interests of the people of both Kerala and Tamil Nadu and the decision of the State to move ahead with the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar is the logical step for implementing the mutually approved agreement of 1979 between the two States, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran has said.

Inaugurating an investigation sub-division office of the Water Resources Department to hold a preliminary investigation for the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar here on Monday, Mr. Premachandran told the Tamil Nadu authorities not to take the move as a drastic step. Reiterating that the State was committed to protecting the interests of Tamil Nadu, especially its farmers, the Minister said the State’s magnanimity was shown to Tamil Nadu when it decided to share the Neyyar waters sometime back even without any formal agreement.

He sought the support of Tamil Nadu farmers in the construction of the new dam. He said physical boundaries were not relevant when it came to issues like water.

The new dam could be built with the support and cooperation of the neighbour. Kerala would not leave any stone unturned to arrive at a consensus and construct the new dam in an atmosphere of mutual respect and friendship, he said.

All democratic processes would be exploited to arrive at a consensus.
