Obesity among children cause for concern

PUDUCHERRY: A study conducted among students above the age of 14 in some schools here has revealed that four among 100 were obese, which means they weigh above 90 kg, according to S. Gopinath, diabetes specialist of the Pondicherry Diabetes Specialities Centre.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said the study had been conducted last year in 6 schools. In Puducherry the children, who had been found obese, were put on a proper diet with balanced nutrition.

“We will approach more schools, especially private schools, this year. A study conducted in Chennai among students of private schools revealed that 22.4 per cent of the children were obese,” he added.
