Seeking relief: Members of the Communist Party of India staging a demonstration in Erode on Monday demanding compensation for farmers, whose cattle succumbed to the foot and mouth disease. — ERODE: Cadres of the Communist Party of India, Erode, staged a protest here on Monday, demanding compensation for farmers, whose livestock succumbed to the foot and mouth disease. Led by the party’s district secretary N. Periasamy, the members sought Rs. 15,000 each for cow or buffalo and Rs. 2,000 each for goat. LivelihoodThere was no other means of livelihood for farmers, who were dependent on the cattle, Mr. Periasamy said in justification of the demand. He said so far 300 cows and buffaloes and 100 goats had succumbed to the disease. MedicinesThe agitating members also sought good dispensaries, adequate stock of medicines, posting of veterinarians and increased fund allotment to control the outbreak. More than 50 members of the party and affected villagers participated.
