Protest against privatisation of ordnance factories

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The All India Defence Employees Federation has planned a nationwide agitation to protest the Union Government’s move to privatise the 39 ordnance factories in the country, since it would affect the livelihood of 4.5 lakh employees, M.K. Ravindran Pillai, the federation president, said here today.

Mr. Pillai told presspersons that though the federation representatives had met Defence Minister A.K. Anthony several times, they had not received any concrete assurance from the Minister that the plans to privatise these factories would be shelved.

In fact, indications were that, with an eye on the real estate value of thousands of acres of land held by these factories, the Government wants to corporatise these factories. “This means the factories will systematically be reduced to a state of sickness, and then they will be referred to the Bureau of Industrial and Financial Restructuring, and finally, they will be offered to the private industry players for a song,” Mr. Pillai said.

He added that their campaign would protest against any such move.
