Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial “Congress dreams” (Nov. 19). It is hardly surprising that the key purpose of the just-concluded AICC session was to introduce Rahul Gandhi, the heir apparent, to the Congressmen. The sycophants would do well to ask themselves what Mr. Gandhi has done to earn such a lofty spot in the AICC. L. Santhosh, Bangalore The dynasty has been the hallmark of the Congress, and its young leaders are sons or daughters of the older ones. It is amusing to see Rahul speaking of merit, since he himself has reached where he has by virtue of his Nehru-Gandhi connection. The efforts of Sonia Gandhi to promote Rahul have been systematic. As for the Congress dream to shun alliances and win on its own, the people of India are no longer prepared to give a majority to any party since no party reflects their aspirations. Coalitions offer scope to even smaller parties to contribute to national development and be part of the mainstream political system. P. Venkatesh, Salem The Congress has always believed in imposing leaders from above. For this, it adopts the dynastic principle. Today, the same is being adopted by many regional parties. Hence the deterioration in our democratic system at various ends. The dynastic mode of succession in democratic institutions will certainly create confusion, chaos, and frustration amongst the really meritorious cadres. Gp Capt N. Neelakantan (retd.), Bangalore
