dated November 20, 1957: Finance Commission

Finance Ministers of the States, who have been in conference in New Delhi since November 17 with the Union Finance Minister, have finally accepted the recommendations of the Finance Commission. The Home Minister, Mr. G.B. Pant’s appeal in the morning and the Prime Minister’s address to them in the afternoon helped the State Finance Ministers to have a clearer appreciation of the serious difficulties facing the country in the field of foreign exchange and internal resources. On a large number of luxury goods the State Ministers have agreed to levy a uniform sales tax of seven per cent to prevent evasion.
