‘New Delhi, the right choice’

NEW DELHI: New Delhi’s preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games received a guarded acclaim from the Chairman of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Sebastian Coe.

“Every big multi-sport event leaves a lasting effect on the hosting city. It creates a legacy value, but one has to understand what really would (happen) after the Games get over,” said Coe in his address at the conference London and Delhi: Host Cities – Unlocking opportunities.

Describing New Delhi as the right choice for hosting the Commonwealth Games, Coe said cities around the world ought to get a chance to host big events as they help transform the city through massive gains in job creation, housing, infrastructure, tourism, etc. He cited the example of Barcelona, saying Barcelona before 1992 Olympics was never in the list of top 20 cities for tourists. In his address, Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games 2010, thanked Coe for supporting Delhi’s bid in hosting the 2010 Games.— Principal Correspondent
