New taxiway commissioned

TIRUCHI: A touch-screen information kiosk and a newly-laid taxiway were commissioned at the Tiruchi airport on Monday.

The information kiosk is a wireless Local Area Network-based public information system, through which passengers can gather information regarding flight schedule and other related data by operating the menu-driven touch screen. Passengers can also access the Internet free of cost to get tourist information.

The system is connected to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Passengers can also file their feedback or complaints on the passenger amenities at the kiosk.

The touch-screen systems will be set up at three vantage spots in the passenger lounge, security hold and the arrival hall of the airport.

K. Ramalingam, Southern Regional Executive Director, AAI, commissioned the system in the presence of N.B. Mathur, General Manager (Information Technology), AAI; P.S.R.K. Sudhakar, General Manager (Projects); and K. Sivakumar, Airport Director (in-charge). Tiruchi is said to be the first airport in the southern region to get the facility. The system can be upgraded into a Common Use Self-Service Counter, which will offer various additional services to passengers in the future.

Mr. Ramalingam also commissioned the taxiway laid as part of the airport expansion project. The taxiway would help the quick entry and exit of aircrafts, and reduce their runway occupation time. The runway of the airport was already extended to 8,000 feet, and a new apron constructed. Work on strengthening the existing apron is to be completed soon.

Mr. Ramalingam said completion of the new terminal building, being constructed at a cost of Rs. 110 crores, is likely to run into a slight delay. “We will review the progress of the work and expedite it,” he said.

The state-of-the-art new terminal building, with aerobridges and the capacity to handle 400 passengers, was scheduled for completion by December 2007.
